Tubbs, Panthers cruise by Ouachita

Sterlington scored in every inning except the second and received another stellar outing from Adam Tubbs in a 9-1 decision over Ouachita on Tuesday night.

Reece Brooks walked on a full count pitch, advanced 90 feet on a passed ball, went to third when Braden Hough reached via error and came down the line on Brock Risinger's base hit to give the visiting Panthers a 1-0 first-inning lead.

Austin Pennington singled home Zach Shaw, who walked and occupied second on Ryan Albritton's sacrifice bunt, with the equalizer in the second.

Sterlington (14-2) gradually separated from there with deuces in the third, fourth and fifth and rouges in the sixth and seventh.

Seaver Sheets and Davis Johnson singled around a walk to Hough as the Panthers loaded the bases with two down in the third. Trey Rugg's two-run, opposite field single put Sterlington ahead to stay.

Sterlington's short game factored heavily into the fifth.

Three consecutive bunts resulted in a single by Harrison Womack, a Zach Jones sacrifice and Brooks reaching on an error. Sheets singled Womack across and Jones plated on Hough's squeeze bunt to make it 5-1.

Tubbs, who struggled with his control early, settled in from there with consecutive 1-2-3 innings. The junior lefty induced three groundouts in the fourth and three fly balls in the fifth.

Continuing to apply the pressure in their half of the fifth, the Panthers padded their lead to 7-1.

Davis Johnson led off with a single and headed to second on Trey Rugg's grounder to third base. One out later, Womack walked to cap a nine-pitch AB and Jones watched four balls in five pitches to fill the bases. Brooks then drilled a two-run single to left.

Johnson singled and stole second with one out in the sixth and scored when Clay Benson reached on a two-out error.

Ouachita had nothing to show for Myles Grayson's leadoff double in the sixth.

Brooks walked and scurried to second on Sheets' base hit to start the seventh. After both runners advanced on a wild pitch, Brooks trucked home with the final run of the game on Hough's RBI infield single.

On for the final three outs, Hayes Crockett walked the first batter he faced (Zach Shaw) before fanning two of the Lions' final three batters.

Tubbs (4-1) allowed an earned run on two hits through six innings for the win. He gave up five walks while striking out three.

Johnson went 3-for-5 and scored twice to pace the Panthers' 12-hit onslaught. Brooks, Sheets and Rugg stroked two singles apiece and Hough, Risinger and Womack singled.

Grayson doubled for the game's only extra base hit and Pennington singled for the Lions (8-11).

Vining took the loss on the mound for Ouachita with Shaw and Dakota Blackwell working out of the bullpen.

With the victory, the Panthers completed a season sweep of the Lions. Sterlington defeated the Lions 4-1 in the season opener on Feb. 18.
