Shelby Dickerson scored nine of her 16 points in the third quarter as Franklin Academy won a 57-40 verdict over Prairie View in the MAIS District 5-2A opener for both teams Tuesday night.
Leading 29-24, the visiting Lady Cougars began to create some distance midway through the third quarter.
Hope Lord's 3-pointer from the right wing, Emily Newman's goal from the right baseline and Dickerson's steal and layup sent FA to a 36-24 advantage.
Hannah Billings and Dickerson then traded 3s before Macy Gilmore connected from the perimeter and Dickerson added another bucket off of a takeaway to put the Lady Cougars up 43-27.
Chloe Halterman's runner and Emma Goss' rebound deuce drew the Lady Spartans within 43-31 as the third quarter came to to an end.
Up 49-36, the Lady Cougars put the game away behind a 6-0 run.
Katelyn Faulk's three-point play and three free throws — two by Hallie Herron, one by Lord — gave FA its biggest lead, 55-36 at the three-minute mark.
Prairie View started strong.
Breaking a 2-2 tie, the Lady Spartans went on a 7-0 binge behind Kaitlyn Bader's bucket from close range, a Rachel Barnhill free throw, Billings' perimeter jumper from just inside the 3-point line and Bader's breakaway basket.
Trailing 9-4 at the end of the quarter, the Lady Cougars opened the second stanza with six unanswered points.
Gilmore's jumper from the lane and a pair of Dickerson buckets gave FA its first lead, 10-9.
Bader's basket off the offensive glass put Prairie View ahead for the final time, 11-10.
Katelyn Faulk then powered her way inside for a layup to put the Lady Cougars ahead for good. Gilmore twice converted both ends of a one-and-one and Dickerson set up her own layup with a steal and knocked down a 3-pointer from the left wing to complete an 11-0 flurry with FA leading 21-11.
Prairie View countered with an 8-2 run, closing the gap to 23-19 at halftime on Billings' runner at the buzzer.
Dickerson was the lone double figures scorer for the Lady Cougars (3-9). Lord, Gilmore and Herron contributed eight apiece, Faulk added seven, Newman tacked on six and Kerrie Clarkson and Skylar Biggs two apiece.
Bader delivered a game-high 21 points for the Lady Spartans (3-7), followed by Billings with 11, Halterman with three, Reagan Patrick and Goss with two each and Barnhill with one.
Prairie View closes out the week with a 6 p.m. district matchup vs. Glenbrook before visiting Riverfield for a non-conference game on Saturday at 4 p.m.
JV: Franklin won the JV tilt 28-17. Goss was high scorer for the Lady Spartans with 11.
