Carroll 46, Sterlington
Holding Sterlington to a season-low point total, the Carroll Bulldogs opened District 2-3A play with a 46-31 conquest Tuesday night in the Panthers' Den.
Sterlington's previous low scoring output came in a 53-35 victory over Bastrop on Dec. 10.
In Tuesday night's matchup, the Panthers were never able to solve the Bulldogs' defense.
"I thought we played pretty good defensively, holding them to 45 points," Sterlington coach Cory Emerson said. "We just didn't play good enough on the offensive end, and they had a lot to do with that."
Carroll's size created problems for the Panthers, particularly offensively.
"They have a lot of length out there, which makes it difficult to score," Emerson said. "Long defenders pose a lot of problems, especially when they are quick. It's hard to go by them off the dribble, and they're hard to shoot over. They have so much length inside, you don't get many second chance opportunities."
Up 6-5 after a slow-paced first quarter, the Bulldogs gradually separated.
Killarious Owens swished a pair of 3s during an eight-point second quarter as Carroll padded its lead to 24-17 at halftime.
Craytonia Simmons scored five points in the third period as the Bulldogs went ahead 33-25 before outscoring the Panthers 13-5 in the final frame.
Randy Jones and Simmons were the game's lone double figures scorers with 15 and 12 points, respectively. Owens and Deonte Edwards both had eight and Terrell Moten three for Carroll (12-11).
Scoring for the Panthers (18-3) were Kyle Henderson with nine, Reid Handy with eight, Kaden Key and Chance Carter with four apiece, and Mike Givens and Fred Hymes with three each.
Sterlington returns to action Friday night at Wossman.
