Sterlington 55, Bastrop 47
Kaela Mullins put up 18 of her 20 points in the middle quarters as Sterlington subdued Bastrop 55-47 Friday night in the Sterlington Shootout.
Bastrop came out strong, taking a 15-9 first quarter lead. Destiny Cephas closed out the opening stanza with back-to-back fast break layups on assists from Cynthia Washington and Chyberia Wilson.
Jamese Rabun's mid-range jumper capped a 6-0 run to give Bastrop its biggest lead, 17-9.
Down 22-18 midway through the second quarter, the Lady Panthers began to make their move.
Mullins battled her way for a rebound bucket and Ashleigh Davis canned a baseline jumper to tie the game at 22.
Cephas answered with a deuce from close range to give the Lady Rams their final lead, 24-22.
Michaela Waters cashed in on both ends of a double bonus, then converted a steal at midcourt into a layup to put Sterlington ahead for good. Free throws by Mullins and Bri Logan brought the score to 28-24, and the Lady Panthers maintained a four-point lead, 33-29, halfway home.
Sterlington opened the second half with a 10-2 run, with Mullins and Jayla Stewart accounting for all of the scoring. Mullins blistered an open 3 and completed a three-point play and Stewart added a bucket and two free throws as the Lady Panthers' lead swelled to 43-31.
Two close-range buckets by Rabun drew the Lady Rams within seven before Mullins' 12-foot jumper enabled Sterlington to carry a 45-36 advantage into the final frame.
Sterlington's lead peaked at 14 (50-36) when Waters opened the fourth quarter scoring with a jumper from the right side and and a breakaway off of a long inbounds pass from Stewart.
Rabun dropped in a pair of mid-range jumpers and Cynthia Washington worked her way inside to narrow the gap to 50-42 with 4:56 remaining, but the Lady Rams could pull no closer.
Waters triggered a 5-0 spurt with a driving layup and later made the front end of a shooting foul, and Davis sank two free throws to give Sterlington a 55-44 cushion with 1:06 to go.
Mullins was joined in the scoring by Waters with 14, Davis with 11, Stewart with six, McKenzie Gray with two and Logan and Jayme Broadway with one each for the Lady Panthers (10-8).
Cephas generated 16 points on a pair of 3s for the Lady Rams (5-10), Mia Hardin furnished 14, Rabun 10, Cynthia Washington three, and Wilson and Tiffany Washington both had two.
