Delta Junior High Spring Game
If they play as hard together as they did against each other Monday afternoon, the Delta Mustangs will be hard to handle next year.
Lining up in the backfield, Zalance Heard covered 85 yards on the final play of the game as the heavily-favored Red nipped the White 28-26 in a spirited spring game.
Officially, the winning touchdown came with just under three minutes remaining. But with two exhausted defenses on the field, coach Lorenzo Price decided to stop the game after Heard's run.
Starting the game on offense from its own 20, the White struck first.
Quarterback Jamarion Bonner carried for 17 yards on fourth-and-two from the 28 for a first down at the 45.
From there, Jkwon Bethea bulled his way for 39 yards to the 16, setting up Dantavius Madison's 10-yard touchdown on a guard-around.
After trading fumbles, the Red tied the game on Derrick Vance's 46-yard pass to Heard. Vance also ran the 2-point conversion to put the Red in front 8-6 with 5:18 to play in the half.
Going back to the guard around, the White regained the lead on Madison's 80-yard jaunt. Despite throwing a shoe at the Red 20, Madison completed the course for his second touchdown.
Madison then closed out the half with a sack, enabling the White to carry a 12-8 lead into halftime.
Dalon Davis' 57-yard run on the fifth play of the second half put the Red back in front. Jacarius DeVoil tacked on the 2-point conversion, bringing the score to 16-12.
Both teams scored on their next offensive snap.
Bethea bounced outside for an 80-yard burst and Jamarion Washington ran the conversion to give the White a 20-16 advantage.
Scoring on his second straight carry, Davis streaked 80 yards down the left sideline to put the Red up 22-20.
The White answered with a six-play scoring drive. Jalen Jones' big block helped spring Washington for 27 yards on the third play of the series. Moments later, Bethea rambled 32 yards to give the White a 26-22 advantage with 3:10 remaining.
The lead would hold up for only one play as Heard slipped a couple of arm tackles and powered his way to paydirt.
Both teams put up some big rushing numbers.
Davis piled up 208 yards on 10 carries.
Linemen were responsible for a vast chunk of the remaining damage. Heard, a tight end/defensive end, proved unstoppable on the game-winning touchdown while Bethea led the White with 165 yards on just four attempts. Madison added 90 yards and a pair of touchdowns on two carries as the left guard.
