The Bastrop Choraliers/Ensemble is approaching their twentieth year of “Celebration of The Spiritual.” A concert is scheduled for Saturday, October 13, 2018, at the St. John Missionary Baptist Church, 1407 West Madison Ave., Bastrop, for 6:00 p.m.

The theme for this year's concert is “The Celebration of the Spiritual, an Operatic Aria and Music from Broadway.”

The concert will have two new performers gracing the stage and one new genre of music.

Leon P. Turner, Bass/Bartone soloist is formerly from Monroe, LA. He is presently an Instructor of Music at Prairie View, A&M University, Prairie View, TX and also a member of the Houston Ebony Opera Guild. Mr. Turner’s Operatic and Oratoria experiences are many, some of which are: Shaunard in Puccini’s “La Boheme”, Jake in Gershwin’s “Porgy and Bess”, and Bass Soloist in Handel’s Messiah. Leon has been a winner of the National Opera Association Vocal Competition in Washington, D.C. His performance will include an Aria, Negro Spirituals and Music from Broadway.

The second new performers who will grace the stage for the first time will be the Bayou-Blend Barbershop Quartet based in Monroe. Following the theme of the evening, they will also perform Negro Spiritual and Music from Broadway.

The member are Chuck Hughes – Tenor, a Monroe Area Librarian who lives in Monroe;

Karl Davis – Lead, a financial advisor for Edward Jones Investment, who lives in Bastrop; Brett Smith – Bass, a retired teacher and Music Educator from the Monroe City School District who lives in Monroe and David Laws – Baritone, a retired heavy equipment maintenance and service supervisor who also lives in Monroe. Their musical style is also the new genre for the concert.

Other performing groups are the Bastrop High School Chorus, Rev. John Griffin, Director; New Dimensions Choral Society, Shreveport, LA, Patricia B. Hall, Director and the Bastrop Choraliers/Ensemble, Melvin D. Anderson, Assistant Director and Grace A. Reese, Founder/Director.

The concert is open to the public, with free admission, however donations are

welcomed. There will be a reception following the concert.
