Morehouse General Hospital affiliate Freddy Box recently had the honor of being a finalist in the Healthcare Hero Awards CRNA category and received recognition at the Healthcare Heroes banquet on Thursday, April 26.

One of three finalists from MGH, Box is a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist with over 14 years of experience in his field. He has worked as a nurse for 22 years. It was while working as a nurse that he took an interest in anesthesia.

“I was a nurse in ICU, and I was always interested in surgery,” he said.

Box graduated from the University of Fort Worth in anesthesia and has worked at MGH for 10 years now. His work entails giving general and regional anesthesia during surgery, doing spinals and epidurals and providing sedation. He said he enjoys his job, being able to help patients during surgery and other procedures and being able to minimize the discomfort.

“In school you learn anatomy and physiology and are able to optimize patients before, during and after surgery to give them a good experience,” he said. “The great thing about anesthesia is that you help take people's pain away.”

Box was very proud to be a finalist in this year's Healthcare Heroes awards. It was the second time he'd been nominated as he had the honor in 2017 as well.

“It's humbling and you're thankful when people notice that you do a good job,” he said.

MGH posted photos of the Healthcare Heroes banquet and congratulated Mr. Box as well as the other finalists on a job well done.
