BASTROP -

local man drowned late Thursday evening after the boat he and his son were in turned over.

According to Morehouse Parish Sheriff Mike Tubbs, the MPSO received a call at 6:30 p.m. Thursday night regarding a boating accident and possible drowning at the Barrett Boat Dock. Cpl. Chad Harper was the first on the scene and was told that Jeff Godwin and his five year old son had been in a boat and it had overturned. A neighbor got into another boat and was able to get the five year old and Cpl. Harper went into the water and was able to get Godwin to shore. He immediately began CPR on Godwin and others on the scene transported the child to St. Francis North. Harper continued CPR until emergency medical personal arrived, at which point they took over live saving actions. Godwin was also transported to St. Francis North, where he was pronounced dead.

Tubbs said the La. Wildlife and Fisheries office was notified, due to the accident being boat related, and they will continue the investigation. Godwin’s son was treated for hypothermia and released.
