Bastrop, La. -

Three men have been arrested in connection with the death of a Morehouse Parish native during an apparent robbery outside a southeast Houston, Texas home.

Houston police said Daniel Mario Towns of Monroe, and a friend, were staying at another friend’s home in Houston when the incident occurred about 8 p.m. Saturday, May 23.

Houston detectives reported that a group of robbers were waiting for Towns and his friend outside the home. They shot Towns in the face and forced the friend into a closet. The friend, whose name has not been released, called nearby relatives, who took Towns to Ben Taub Hospital. Towns died after surgery on Sunday.

Three men have been arrested and possibly two more remain at large and are being sought in connection with the killing. Police describe them as black and in their early 20s.

Jonathan D. Canfield, 22, of Monroe, and 20-year-old Perry Antwine Lowe of Houston, have been arrested by Houston Police and charged with capital murder in the death of Towns. They are being held at the Harris County Jail in Texas without bond.

In Monroe, according to Ouachita Parish Sheriff’s Office, William Franklin Garrett Jr., 30, of Monroe, has been arrested on a fugitive from justice warrant in a capital murder case.

Towns, 40, was born in Oak Ridge to the late Mattie L. Towns and John S. Towns. He grew up in Bastrop, attended Bastrop High School, and later moved to Monroe where he attended Richwood High School. He joined the Air Force in 1988. He also attended Grambling State University and the University of Louisiana at Monroe.
