Bastrop High senior Rueben Randle was one of 11 high school football players to receive a Maxwell Award on Thursday night in San Antonio. Randle, a wide receiver/quarterback, was selected for the award as an athlete. Presenting the award on behalf of the Maxwell Award Club is former Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Vincent Papale. Randle will play in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl Saturday at noon on NBC.

Bastrop High senior Rueben Randle added another honor to his collection when he received the Maxwell Award on Thursday night in San Antonio. Randle will play in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl, which will be televised live Saturday at noon from the Alamodome.

Randle, who moved from wide receiver to quarterback as a senior, received the award as an athlete.

Randle completed 166-of-274 passes for 2,442 yards with 20 touchdowns and nine interceptions in helping the Rams to an 11-2 mark and a Class 4A state semifinal berth. He also rushed for a team-high 680 yards on 101 carries despite being hampered by a hamstring injury for nearly half the season. In all, Randle scored 14 touchdowns (12 rushing, 1 receiving, 1 punt return).

As a junior, he caught 65 passes for 1,068 yards and 11 touchdowns as Bastrop caputred its third straight state championship.

Randle was selected first-team All-State as an athlete in 2008 and first-team All-State as a wide receiver in 2007 by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association.

Other Maxwell Award winners include quarterback Tyrik Rollins of Sulphur Springs (Texas) High School, running back Bryce Brown of Wichita (Kansas) East HS, wide receiver Randall Carroll of Los Angeles Cathedral HS, tight end Sheldon Richardson of St. Louis Gateway HS, offensive lineman Xavier Nixon of Fayetteville (N.C.) Jack Britt HS, defensive back Dre Kirkpatrick of Gadsden City (Ala.) HS, Vontaze Burfict of Corona (Calif.) Centennial HS, defensive tackle JaMarkus McFarland of Lufkin (Texas) HS, punter Jackson Rice of Moraga (Calif.) Campolinda HS, and Brendan Gibbons of West Palm Beach (Fla.) Cardinal Newman HS.
