There is dissension among the ranks of the Prairie View football coaching staff.

When Texas and Alabama play in Thursday night’s BCS National Championship Game, line coach Reagan “Dawg” Morrison and outside linebackers coach Larry Taylor will be watching intently — just not together.

Despite spending his entire life in Bastrop, Morrison was born into a family of Crimson Tide fans. Over the summer, Morrison accompanied a group of Prairie View football players to the Alabama football camp in Tuscaloosa.

Contacted Wednesday night, Morrison was keeping a close eye on the weather forecast. Like students throughout the parish, Morrison was hoping for a snow day. His heart just wouldn’t be in teaching.

“I hope it snows so I can pregame all-day,” Morrison said with a laugh. “If we lose, I hope it snows Friday, too.”

A native Texan, Taylor’s lifelong allegiance lies with the Longhorns.

Both were asked to share their thoughts on why they will be celebrating a national championship Thursday night.

Featuring coach Nick Saban and Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram, the Crimson Tide is listed as a 4-point favorite over the Longhorns and quarterback Colt McCoy.

Morrison on why Alabama will win:

“I feel like Alabama has the best coach in America and the best defense.

“Offensively, as far as the quarterbacks, Texas has more experience. Alabama, all year, has relied on its defense. I think the defense can slow McCoy down. Plus, having the Heisman Trophy winner doesn’t hurt.”

Taylor on why Texas will win:

“In a big game, a lot of times, the team that wins is the team that’s not supposed to be there. An oblong football bounces in some funny ways.

“I know we have the best quarterback and I think Texas’ defense is better than people give it credit for.

“If you look at the history of bowl games, the Heisman Trophy winners haven’t done very well. If Texas can stop the running game, I don’t think their quarterback (Greg McElroy) can beat us.

“I agree with ‘Dawg’ that Alabama has the best coach in America, but the defensive coordinator (Will Muschamp) at Texas is pretty good, too.”

Morrison and Taylor have taken a low-key approach to the game, not even placing a friendly wager on the game.

“It’s just for bragging rights,” Morrison said.

One of the coaches will have a national championship to brag about Friday morning. The other will be tempted to burn a sick day — or pray for snow.
