Former Bastrop High Parade All-American Rueben Randle’s 75-yard touchdown reception in LSU’s 24-21 victory over Alabama was the Tigers’ longest past play of the 2010 season. The junior wide receiver has been named as a preseason candidate for the Fred Biletnikoff Award, an annual honor presented to college football’s outstanding receiver.

LSU junior wide receiver Rueben Randle is up for the Fred Biletnikoff Award. A former Bastrop High Parade All-American, Randle was one of 75 players on the preseason watch list released Thursday by the Tallahassee Quarterback Club.

Randle caught 33 passes for 544 yards and 3 touchdowns last season. At his best in big games, Randle snared a career-high six receptions for 73 yards and a TD in a 24-17 loss to eventual national champion Auburn. He also produced a three-catch, 125-yard effort in a 24-21 victory over Alabama, including a 75-yard TD grab for the Tigers’ longest pass play of the season. Randle’s other touchdown came on a 51-yard catch against North Carolina.

Playing in all 13 games, including four starts, Randle caught 11 passes for 173 yards and two touchdowns as a true freshman. Both touchdowns came against Ole Miss.

Randle is majoring in sports administration.

Recognizing the nation’s outstanding receiver, the Biletnikoff Award winner will be announced during the Home Depot ESPN College Football Awards Show on Dec. 8. Justin Blackmon of Oklahoma State was last year’s winner.

LSU NO. 1: Sporting News Magazine has tabbed LSU No. 1 in its preseason college football poll. Rounding out the top five are Oklahoma, Alabama, Stanford and Oregon.

At the other end of the spectrum, the publication pegged Louisiana-Lafayette dead last at No. 120. Among Louisiana’s remaining Division I-A football schools, Louisiana Tech is ranked No. 94, ULM is No. 96 and Tulane is No. 104.

KUDOS: If you missed Saturday’s Bastrop-Delta alumni basketball double header, you truly missed a treat. Players and fans alike seemed to have a great time. I know I had a  blast visiting with some guys I haven’t seen in too long. Congratulations to event coordinator Tamika Jones on a job well done.

Tamika plans on making the All-Star Shootout an annual event — it started last year with a single game in Bastrop. Judging by the reaction of the players and the size of Saturday’s crowd, I only see this event getting bigger and better.

One improvement needs to be made next year, though I’m not sure who is responsible. It appeared as if someone was trying to make the games a reality event by heating the building up to The Oven (Delta’s old gym) standards. The Oven can’t be duplicated, so, someone, please turn the air conditioner on early next year!

FOOTBALL, ANYONE? Former Delta quarterback and point guard Derrick “Bam” Lawson suggested taking the function a step further next year.

FOOTBALL, ANYONE? Former Delta quarterback and point guard Derrick “Bam” Lawson suggested taking the function a step further next year.

“I wish we could do football next year,” Lawson said. “I think I might still be able to throw a football 55 yards.”
Lawson now resides in Houston and is employed by the Cabot Corporation in Lafayette. He is the father of four, ranging in ages from 2-17.

Bam’s suggestion to bring back the football rivalry may not be such a good idea — the last gridiron meeting between the Rams and Mustangs in the Bastrop Lions Club Jamboree was cut short due to a bench-clearing brawl.

Then again, a football game just might work. While there was no doubt both sides were playing to win in both games, everybody seems to have mellowed a bit. Besides, most of the players who competed Saturday were way too tired to fight after the game.

DIXIE TAB: The Enterprise’s annual salute to Dixie Baseball and Softball will run in Saturday’s edition with photos of all 45 teams.
