Former Bastrop Rams Rueben Randle and Josh Downs went through their first collegiate practices as LSU began fall practice on Thursday.

Randle, rated by rivals.com as the No. 1 wide receiver and No. 2 overall prospect by rivals.com, and Downs, a defensive tackle, worked out with the incoming freshman during the afternoon session. Veterans and selected newcomers practiced in the morning.

In an article on www.tigerrag.com, Matt Reynolds reported:

“Randle reported to camp at 6-3, 195, but he is undoubtedly exceeding his measurements. Plus, the nation’s top-ranked receiver displayed some pretty nifty hands as well. He didn’t necessarily make any leaping catches, but caught everything thrown his way crisply.

“Undersized Josh Downs is no doubt the smallest of the incoming defensive linemen, but the true freshman was complemented for his aggressiveness on sled drills.”

During his post-practice press conference, LSU head coach Les Miles said, “Rueben Randle looked good in the afternoon practice.”

Tiger Rag editor Matt Deville was impressed with Downs’ first practice as a Tiger.

“Josh was throwing people around,” Deville said. “He’s by far the smallest of the freshmen defensive linemen, but he doesn’t play small. He got a lot of head slaps from (defensive line coach) Brick Hailey.”

Continuing split-squad workouts, the Tigers will practice in shorts and helmets today, before adding shoulder pads on Saturday. Media and Fan Day are scheduled for Sunday, while Tuesday marks the first full squad practice in pads.

BRAD UPBEAT: Coach Brad Bradshaw was encouraged as Bastrop closed out the week of practice on Thursday afternoon.

“The young kids are further along that I expected them to be,” Bradshaw said. “The main thing is a lot of those kids are competing. Different ones have brought a different type of energy level that we didn’t really knew nothing about.”

With the Rams seeking to replace 30-plus seniors and 20 starters from last season, the youngsters who impress will have an opportunity to play on Friday nights.

ALUMNI VISIT: Downs, Randle, Marshay Green (Ole Miss), Rodney Anthony (Tuskegee), Trevor Rodgers (Arkansas-Monticello), Preston Coleman (Louisiana College) and Aaron Randle were among the former Rams spotted at recent practices.

Bradshaw is always glad to see the alumni come back.

“The biggest thing that happened this week was having all the alumni come back,” Bradshaw said. “I thought that was big for our team, especially having Marshay here for three days. Every time he comes by, the energy he brings out there is just amazing.”

WATSON RETURNS: Running back/receiver Jevante Watson returned to the practice field Thursday after being held out of several workouts due to dehydration.

NEXT WEEK: The Rams resume camp on Monday, before donning shoulder pads on Tuesday. With LHSAA rules mandating three days in shorts and shoulder pads, Friday’s Bastrop-Neville scrimmage will mark the first time in full pads for both teams. The scrimmage will be held at ULM’s Malone Stadium at 8 p.m.

“Playing the first week of practice is going to be odd,” Bradshaw said.

Other matchups include Carroll vs. Oak Grove at 3:30 p.m., West Ouachita vs. Richwood at 5 and West Monroe vs. Franklin Parish at 6:30.

Admission is $5 ($3 for students), with proceeds going to the Louisiana High School Officials Association.

ON THE COVER: Former Bastrop High linebacker Rogers Loche of Bastrop is on the cover of the Northwestern State football media guide, along with quarterback John Hundley, wide receiver Darrius Duffy and first-year head coach Bradley Dale Peveto.

Loche enters camp listed as the Demons’ starting weakside linebacker. Playing in all 12 games in a reserve role last season, Loche registered 38 tackles (23 solo) and a sack.
