BASTROP -

Bastrop’s shooting woes continued Tuesday night. By the time the Rams finally got untracked offensively, it was too late as Neville was on its way to a 55-44 victory at Sam’s Place.

After shooting just 28 percent from the floor in a 54-36 loss to Wossman on Friday night, the Rams found the bottom of the net on just one of their first 13 field goal attempts against Neville.

Meanwhile, Dee Garrison drilled a pair of 3-pointers to stake the Tigers to an 11-2 first quarter lead.

Set up by Garrison’s shovel pass, Zay Henderson’s two-handed throwdown boosted the Tigers’ lead to 13-2 early in the second period.

Showing signs of coming to life offensively, the Rams reeled off six unanswered points on Donald Washington’s driving layup and a pair of Rodney Heard putbacks to close within 13-8. But the Rams had dug themselves an early hole.

“Neville’s a hard team to come back on,” Bastrop coach David Patrick said. “Basically, they’re playing with four guards and a center, so it’s very difficult to get them to turn the ball over.”

Playing with four guards also creates offensive mismatches for the Tigers.

“We rotated between a 2-3 and a 1-3-1 all night,” Patrick said. “It’s almost impossible for us to match up with them man-to-man with those four guards.

“Delarius Jones and Thomas Austin are guards, but they rebound like 6-2 forwards. They were able to get some putbacks, especially in the first half.”

After seeing the lead reduced to five, the Tigers answered with a 7-0 run. John Diarse scored from point-blank range, assisted by K.D. Turpin, and Thomas Austin added a three-point play and a rebound bucket to put the Tigers in command 20-12.

Buckets by Will Lee and Heard helped the Rams close the gap to 20-12 at intermission.

Neville bumped its lead up to 38-28 at the end of three.

Trailing by 10, Bastrop closed the deficit to six with a four-point possession.

Tobias Haynes made the front end of a two-shot foul and the Rams maintained control of the basketball on the offensive rebound. Moments later, Haynes hit a trifecta from the right corner to bring the Rams within 48-42 with just over a minute to play.

Garrison knocked down both ends of a one-and-one, before Heard’s basket made it a six-point (50-44) game, once again, with 42 seconds to play.

Neville then put the game away at the free throw line as Austin and Garrison combined to close out the game with four straight free throws.

Neville shot just 55 percent (10-of-18) from the line for the game, but was a clutch 6-for-7 in the final two minutes.

Henderson, a 6-5 sophomore, was a dominant force inside with 15 points — 12 in the second half — and a trio of dunks.

“Henderson has a bright future,” Patrick said. “I thought Garrison had a good game, too.”

Henderson led a quartet of Tigers (24-10, 5-3) in double figures. Garrison scored eight of his 13 points in the fourth quarter and accounted for all three of the Tigers’ 3-pointers. Jones added 12 points and Austin 11.

Heard was high scorer for the Rams (11-15, 2-5) with 14 points and Washington tacked on 12.

Bastrop finished the evening 18-of-46 (39.3 percent) from the floor and 4-of-8 from 3-point range, while making just 2-of-9 (22.2 percent) free throws.

Notes: Bastrop guard Darren Anderson, who checked out of school Monday, missed the game with the flu. ... Neville bounced back from a pair of gut-wrenching overtime losses. First-place Wossman avoided its first district loss by trimming the Tigers 72-70 at the Purple Spectrum. ... On Saturday, the short-handed but valiant Tigers carried defending Class 5A state champion Ouachita into double overtime in an eventual 80-72 loss in the Hall of Fame game at ULM. Neville, which dresses out only nine players at full strength, finished the Ouachita game with four players. With two reserves participating in the Mardi Gras parade, the Tigers were down to seven bodies Saturday. Three players fouled out, forcing the Tigers to play undermanned from the middle of the first OT session on. Neville finished the contest in a 2-2 zone.
