Josh Downs and Rueben Randle reported to camp ready to play. Less than three weeks into their college careers, the true freshmen from Bastrop have caught the attention of LSU head coach Les Miles.

From Tiger Rag articles written by Matt Deville and Matt Reynolds:

Right now, Al Woods, Drake Nevis and Charles Alexander would appear to be the top three defensive tackles. Hicks would be the logical choice as the fourth, but with him being out it may open the way for freshmen Chris Davenport and Josh Downs to work themselves into the rotation. LSU coach Les Miles said at this point he didn’t know how the depth chart at tackle would shape up, but both Davenport and Downs are game ready.

“Both have made strong moves,” Miles said. “Downs certainly knows how to step on the field and play. He has a motor that really runs hot. Chris Davenport is learning the position and has plenty of talent. Both guys, in my opinion, are ready to play on Saturdays. How it will end, I am not certain of that yet.”

Considering how attrition dealt a heavy blow to the LSU wide receiving corps, Miles is quite pleased with the rapid development of Rueben Randle. It seems he is right on track to step in as LSU’s third receiver.

“In my opinion, he is further ahead than I would have predicted,” Miles said. “There’s always a learning curve with any young freshman that comes in and has to get on board (quickly). But Rueben learns very quickly and understands his role. The thing that we count on him to do and the intensity we ask him to do them with are different from high school, yet he understands them. He gives great effort and does everything he can do to accommodate us.”

With that being said, could Randle be in the starting lineup when the Tigers travel to Washington for the Sept. 5 season opener?

“I like where he’s at,” Miles said. “I think we use him early in the season and late as well.”

BASTROP CONNECTION: LSU special teams coordinator/defensive line coach Joe Robinson was Bastrop High’s defensive coordinator on Greg Morgan’s staff in 1988.
Entering his second year at LSU, Robinson was the only defensive coach retained by Miles from last year’s staff.

Bastrop was the second stop in Robinson’s coaching journey. A 1985 graduate of LSU, he spent two seasons at Catholic High of Point Coupee where he was defensive coordinator in 1986 and head coach in ’87.

Upon leaving Bastrop, Robinson spent three years as a member of Joe Raymond Peace’s  staff at Louisiana Tech, followed by stints at Southern Mississippi, a second stop at Louisiana Tech in 2001, Houston, Central Florida and Arizona.

CHAMPIONSHIP TICKETS: For the second straight year, tickets to the SEC championship football game on Dec. 5 in Atlanta will be among the main attractions of a silent auction at the Hope Event.

Proceeds from the event will go to the Morehouse Cancer Fund.

GILBERT TRANSFERS: Colby Gilbert has transferred from Bossier Parish Community College to Baton Rouge Community College.

Gilbert injured his ankle last summer and was redshirted last season. The Prairie View product was signed by BPCC as a pitcher, but will be given a shot at first base at Baton Rouge.

Gilbert joins former Bastrop High catcher Tyler Eldridge at the Baton Rouge school.

SOFTBALL TOURNEY: Prairie View will host a seven-team fastpitch tournament on Saturday. Game 1, between the Lady Spartans and Union Christian, is scheduled for 8 a.m. with the championship game set for 6:40 p.m.
