Bastrop, La. -

This one went according to script.

Bastrop jumped out to a 41-0 lead midway through the first quarter, unloaded its bench, cruised to a 47-14 victory and incurred no major injuries.

Bastrop (8-1, 4-0), which clinched its fourth straight outright District 2-4A title, now awaits the first-round playoff pairings which will be announced Sunday afternoon.

For now, the Rams can enjoy a mini break before pursuing their fourth straight state title.

“I think the kids are excited about getting a long weekend,” said Bastrop coach Brad Bradshaw. “Hopefully, they understand that if every coach and player will commit themselves, we have a chance. If every coach and every player doesn’t commit, (the playoffs) will be a short-lived process.”

Receiving the opening kickoff, the Rams needed just three plays and a little over a minute to get on the board.

Kelvin Perry’s 19-yard return enabled the offense to set up at the 28.

Rueben Randle completed passes of 7 yards to Hunter Freeland and 13 yards to Dwight Hawkins, moving the sticks to the Bastrop 48. From there, Randle rolled to his right and spotted Stanley Moore all alone in the middle of the field at the 3 to open the scoring.

Bastrop’s try for 2 failed, leaving the score at 6-0 just 1:04 into the contest.

Desmond Wilson booted the ensuing kickoff for a touchback.

On Carroll’s first play from scrimmage RaDarius Winston intercepted a screen pass to give the offense a short field at the 13.

“Winston listened throughout the week and recognized the play to give us a short field,” coach Bradshaw said.

Right tackle Willie Graham’s 7-yard reception on the tackle eligible and Randle’s 4-yard pickup set up first-and-goal at the 2. Dwight Hawkins followed right guard Goldmon Moore into the endzone from there. Darren Anderson caught the 2-point pass, upping the Rams’ lead to 14-0 with 9:48 still to play in the opening period.

Crippled by the loss of its top two quarterbacks — Xavier Gray and Dijon Hill — in the last week, the Bulldogs could get little going offensively.

“We wanted to get ahead early because we knew they were limited in what they could do offensively,” said Bastrop defensive end D’Andre (Buck) Bradshaw. “We were able to get a big lead early and let the younger guys get some playing time.

“Now we can start getting ready for the playoffs.”

Carroll did pick up a pair of first downs on its next possession, but was soon forced to punt.

Perry’s 18-yard return brought the Rams’ offense back onto the field at their own 33.

Two plays later, Randle kept to the right, eluded three defenders in the backfield, cut back up the middle and sprinted to paydirt on a breath-taking 59-yard TD jaunt. Dwight Hawkins’ conversion run pushed the bulge to 22-0 with 5:37 remaining in the opening frame.

Carroll went three and out on its next series as D.D. Jones and Winston combined to stop a second down running play for a loss of two.

Perry’s 23-yard punt return gave the Rams another short field at the 18.

Preston Coleman’s 11-yard reception and an off-sides penalty against the Bulldogs led to Randle’s 3-yard TD run off of a beautifully-executed play fake. Devin Richards booted the extra point to put the Rams up 29-0 with 3:13 still to go in the first quarter.

Carroll (2-7, 0-4) went three and out on its next possession, before the Rams put together an eight-play, 52-yard drive. Jermario (Bull) Tate’s 3-yard run and Richards’ PAT widened the gap to 36-0 early in the second frame.

Bastrop’s starters were done for the night.

Carroll’s next possession resulted in a safety off of a low shotgun snap.

Following a block from Romalis Whitmore, Jevante Watson returned the ensuing free kick 48 yards to to the 13. Bastrop eventually settled for Richards’ 23-yard field goal, bringing the score to 41-0 midway through the second frame.

Bastrop manufactured 260 yards (158 rushing, 102 passing) of total offense in the first half, while holding the Bulldogs to 22 (8 rushing, 14 passing) as offensive linemen Graham, Goldmon Moore, Trevor Rodgers, Richard Blocker and DeMaoria Harlston controlled the line of scrimmage.

Carroll put up a pair of touchdowns on Cordell Collins’ 9-yard third quarter run and ZuBrandon Brown’s 2-yard burst with 4:41 remaining.

“The only negative was the play of our second defense and sometimes our third defense,” coach Bradshaw said.

Rodriguez Moore’s 52-yard kickoff return and Darren Anderson’s 12-yard pass to Jonathan Daniels led to a first-and-goal at the 4.

Quarterback Eugene Tyler’s 3-yard run advanced the Rams to the 1, before Rodriguez Moore took it in from there on the final play of the game.
