BASTROP -

Johnathan Ross scored 13 of his game-high 17 points in the second half as Wossman remained undefeated in District 3-4A play with a 54-36 road victory over Bastrop on Friday night.

Wossman (23-6, 6-0) rattled off the game’s first eight points and never surrendered the lead.

Bastrop did not score until its sixth possession when Darren Anderson finished a driving scoop shot.

Four different Wildcats had already dented the scoreboard by then. JaMichael Goodwin canned an 18-footer to open the scoring, Kimarcus Jones crashed the offensive glass, Ross downed two free throws and James Augurson stole an inbounds pass in front of the basket for a two-hand throwdown.

After Goodwin’s 3-pointer put the ’Cats up by 10 (14-4), buckets by Donald Washington and Anderson helped the Rams whittle the margin down to 14-8 by the end of the quarter.

Outscoring the cold-shooting Rams 12-6 in the second quarter, Wossman expanded its lead to 26-14 at halftime.

Bastrop shot just 28.8 percent (15-of-52) from the floor, including 0-for-9 from 3-point range.

“We couldn’t throw it in the ocean,” Bastrop coach David Patrick said. “I told the kids after the game that we played well enough defensively and we played hard enough. Offensively, we didn’t get any shots to fall early and started pressing.”

Bastrop limited Ross, the Wildcats’ wide-bodied aircraft carrier of a center, to 12 points in a 64-51 first round loss on Jan. 19. Wossman’s guards responded by burying seven 3-pointers.

It was a different story Friday night. Although the Rams held the ’Cats to three treys — one in the second half — Ross made up the difference inside. Accounting for Wossman’s first eight points of the half, Ross single-handedly widened the spread to 34-17.

“We gave Ross a little more space tonight because we were more active on the perimeter,” Patrick said. “(Ross) is a smart player. He used the basket as a shield to set up his reverses.”

Anderson’s 12-footer from the paint drew the Rams with 34-19, but Miguel “Hot Sauce” Gipson converted a breakaway layup and swished a deep 3-pointer to put the Wildcats up by 20.

Wossman carried a 42-24 lead into the fourth quarter and the Rams were never closer than 16 the rest of the way.

Ross , who also pulled a team-high nine rebounds, was complemented in the Wildcats’ attack by Gipson with 14 points and Augurson with 12. Adrian Witherspoon was high scorer for Bastrop (9-13, 3-5) with 13.

Wrapping up a two-game homestand, the Rams face Neville on Tuesday.
