Prairie View 16, River Oaks 6
MONROE — Scoring in every inning, Prairie View roughed up River Oaks 12-2 Thursday afternoon in MAIS District 5-2A softball play.
Prairie View (7-8, 2-2) put three on the board in the top of the first.
After the first two batters went down in order, Kayla Hawthorne doubled to left fiel and circled the bases on Elle Morgan's base hit to center. Rachel Hankins followed with a base hit to left, setting the stage for Chloe Halterman's two-run double.
Prairie View padded its lead to 5-0 with two in the second.
Madi Crymes led off with a base hit to left and Emma Goss reached on misplayed bunt. Anna Grace White, representing the top of the batting order, chased both runners across with a two-run double.
Prairie View built a 12-0 advantage with three in the third, three in the fourth and one in the fifth.
Hankins started the third with a triple to center and scored when Halterman was safe via error.
With one away, Hannah Billings and Crymes knocked consecutive one-out doubles and White slammed a two-out triple.
Three straight one-out doubles by Hankins, Halterman and Billings and Crymes' two-run single brought the score to 11-0 in the fourth.
Hawthorne doubled home Chloe Hobson, who singled, with the Lady Spartans' final run in the fifth.
River Oaks broke up the shutout with two in its half of the fifth, but was unable to extend the game.
Hawthorne threw four shutout innings for the win, striking out eight, walking one and allowing three hits.
Prairie View out-hit the Lady Mustangs 16-6. Hankins went 3-for-4 with a triple, double and single and scored three runs, and Crymes went 3-for-3 with a double, two singles and three RBIs. White contributed a triple, a double and four RBIs, Halterman (4 RBIs), Hawthorne and Billings poled a pair of doubles, and Hobson and Morgan singled.
Closing out district play with a pair of road games next week, the Lady Spartans visit Glenbrook on Tuesday (4 p.m. JV, 5:30 varsity) and Franklin Academy on Thursday (5 p.m. JV, 6:30 varsity).
