Riverfield 2, Prairie View 0

RAYVILLE — Mary Madelyn Bennett threw a one-hit shutout as Riverfield edged Prairie View 2-0 Friday afternoon at the Riverfield Tournament in the season opener for both teams.

Prairie View pitcher Kayla Hawthorne worked out of a jam in the bottom of the first as Molly Allen walked on five pitches and Morgan Lewis singled up the middle to start the game. Keeping her composure, Hawthorne retired the next three batters on a fly ball to center fielder Emma Goss, a groundout to first baseman Rachel Hankins and an inning-ending strikeout.

Bennett helped herself offensively by walking on a seven-pitch at bat to start the second, stealing second and third and scoring the game's first run on an error.

Bennett faced the minimum through the first three innings before yielding a one-out double to Chloe Halterman in the fourth. One out later, Hannah Billings walked to place the tying run aboard before Bennett got out of the inning with a punchout.

Riverfield doubled its lead to 2-0 in the fourth before the 70-minute time limit expired.

Lilly Gandy doubled to left with one away and scored on Hixon Taylor's base hit.

Bennett struck out two and walked two in the four-inning complete game victory.

Lewis doubled and singled, Gandy doubled and Taylor singled for the Lady Raiders.

Halterman doubled for the Lady Spartans' lone hit and Billings went 0-for-0 with a pair of walks.

Hawthorne allowed one earned run on four hits while walking three and striking out three for the Lady Spartans.
