Rising freshmen from Morehouse and Delta are to report for a three-day mini-camp set for April 9-11 at Delta.
Bastrop High will hold a spring mini-camp for incoming freshmen April 9-11 at Delta Junior High.
Rising freshmen from both Morehouse Junior High and Delta will participate in the camp.
Besides taking steps toward assisting the newcomers in the transition to varsity football, second-year head coach Adrian Burnette hopes the camp will help build camaraderie between the Rams' two feeder programs.
"We have to do a better job of combining Bastrop and Delta," Burnette said. "We need to start doing a better job of blending the two programs. It really starts with the sixth and seventh-graders. This year, we are going to start with the eight-graders, who are going to be ninth-graders."
Coaches from the varsity and both junior highs will conduct the camp.
Along with the opportunity for the players to meet one another, the clinic will serve as an introductory phase for players and coaches.
"The camp will give us a better idea of who we have coming in," Burnette said. "The way it is now, a position coach may not truly meet the freshmen until the spring. This is an introduction of him to us and us to him."
Burnette says one of the objectives of the mini-camp is better participation from incoming freshmen in the summer program.
"If a kid starts missing, his position coach will have his contact information and be able to get in touch with him and get him to practice," Burnette said.
Monday's (April 9) practice will focus on offense while Tuesday's workout will be geared toward defense.
"We will get them used to the verbiage the first two days, then we will evaluate and assign positions and have a regular practice Wednesday," Burnette said.
Burnette emphasized that all three workouts are open to the public.
"We would like to invite the community to come out, especially the parents," Burnette said. "This is an open invitation to come interact with the coaches, to meet their son's position coach and see our vision for the program."
BAYOU JAMB: Bastrop will return to the Bayou Jamb at ULM this season. Burnette says plans have been finalized for the Rams to play Sterlington on Friday, Aug. 24 at 8 p.m.
