Prairie View 20, River Oaks 3 (1st game)
MONROE — Responding to an early deficit, Prairie View rattled off 20 unanswered runs on its way to defeating River Oaks 20-3 in five innings. Game 1 of Monday's double header marked the start of MAIS District 5-2A play for both teams.
After conceding three runs in the bottom of the first, the Spartans (9-2) took control of the game with a 10-run second.
With one out, the Spartans got on the board without swinging the bat as Hayes Crockett, Mason Rogers, Gage Riles, Tyler Peters went hit by pitch-walk-HBP-walk. Connor Ouellette's two-run double to right field squared the game at 3 with the top of the order due up.
Layton Rainbolt singled Peters home with the go-ahead run, Tanner Caldwell cracked a two-run double and Blake Ray reached on an error, raising the Spartans' advantage to 7-3.
With still only one out, Jacob Farrar sent a two-run bomb over the right-center field fence.
Stepping to the dish with the bases clear, Crockett singled and eventually stole home on the front end of a double steal.
Leading off the second, Peters cleared the center field fence to put the Spartans up 11-3.
Prairie View closed out the scoring with two in the fourth and seven in the fifth.
Crockett's RBI triple highlighted the fourth.
In the fifth, Rogers doubled home a pair of runs and Peters capped a four-RBI game with a two-run single.
River Oaks went up 3-0 in the first.
Cody Tindall opened the frame with a base hit, stole second and scored on Sam Conti's one-out base hit. Sam Alexander walked and Chandler Smith singled to load the bases. Conti and Alexander both scored on an error.
It was all Prairie View the rest of the way.
Caldwell worked four innings for the win, striking out 10 and walking two while allowing three runs (one earned) on five hits, all singles. Cade Murphy finished with a 1-2-3 fifth.
Farrar and Peters homered and singled to headline the Spartans' 14-hit output. Crockett went 2-for-2 with a triple, a single, two RBIs and four runs scored. Ouellette drove in three runs with a double and a single, Rainbolt and Ray had two singles and Caldwell and Rogers doubled.
Conti went 2-for-3 and Tindall, Alexander and Smith singled for the Mustangs.
