Sterlington 9, Ouachita Christian 1
Senior first baseman Amber Parnell blasted her first varsity home run and Tanner Wilson carried a shutout into the seventh as Sterlington handled Ouachita Christian 9-1 Monday afternoon.
Scoring in every inning, the Lady Panthers (13-2) won for the 11th straight time.
Breanna Sylvestri dropped a one-out single just beyond the grasp of OCS shortstop Macey Downhour to kick start the Lady Panthers in the second. K.B. Briley followed with a walk and Catherine Trichell nailed an RBI double to right-center. After Downhour made a nice play on Carson Lyon's low liner for the second out, Briley trotted home as Parnell reached on a two-base throwing error.
Sterlington built the gap to 4-0 with single markers in the second and third.
Jada Smith slapped an opposite-field double over the lip of the infield dirt with one out in the second, proceeded to third on Tanner Wilson's base hit to left and dashed home on Sylvestri's infield hit.
In the third, Carson Lyon banged a leadoff double to right field and scored the Lady Panthers' fourth run on consecutive groundouts by Parnell and Carly Wilson.
Smith opened the fourth by lining a base hit off the glove of OCS pitcher Sarah Tillman. A throwing error on Tanner Wilson's bunt left runners at second and third with still nobody out. Sylvestri squeezed Smith across and Briley gapped an RBI double to left-center, bringing the score to 6-0.
Parnell opened the fifth with a home run, which cleared the fence in straight-away center field with room to spare.
Up next, Carly Wilson doubled, moved to third on Hannah Jerkins' sacrifice bunt and scored when Tanner Wilson was safe on a two-out error.
On to the sixth, Lyon's RBI triple widened the bulge to 9-0.
Tanner Wilson retired the first eight batters she faced and allowed only one runner past second base through six innings.
OCS broke up the shutout in the seventh when Allie Rae Hamby jolted a leadoff double to center, scurried to third on Emily Branch's base hit and scored on a throwing error.
Tanner Wilson struck out two, walked two and held the Lady Eagles to four hits. Jerkins, a sophomore, was a wall in her first start behind the plate as the Lady Panthers weren't charged with a single wild pitch or a passed ball.
Sylvestri went 3-for-3 to spearhead the Lady Panthers' 12-hit attack. Lyon tripled and doubled, Smith doubled and singled, Parnell left the yard, Briley, Trichell and Carly Wilson doubled, and Tanner Wilson singled.
For the Lady Eagles (7-7), Hamby doubled, and Breanna Anderson, Branch and Jenna Watson singled.
Sterlington travels to Mangham (13-2) on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. It's the first meeting between the former district rivals since the Lady Dragons held on to edge the Lady Panthers 3-2 in last year's Class 2A state championship game.
