Sterlington 6, Caldwell 5
MONROE — Facing a 5-3 deficit, Sterlington plated three runs in the bottom of the sixth to pull out a 6-5 victory over Caldwell on Friday evening.
Matching two potential Class 3A State Tournament teams, the game was moved to Forsythe Park due to wet grounds at Panther Park.
Caldwell took an early 1-0 lead when Whitney Tate reached on a leadoff error, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and crossed home on Victoria Abrams' one-out, RBI single to left.
Sterlington gained the upper hand with three in its half of the first.
Tanner Wilson drew a leadoff walk and was safe at second when Sylvestri reached on a fielder's choice. Both runners scored as K.B. Briley made her way aboard on a two-base error.
With one away, Rebekah Wood chased Briley home with a base hit to right-center.
Caldwell reclaimed the lead with ones in the third and fourth and a deuce in the fifth.
Abrams walked with one out in the second, stole her way into scoring position, held at third on Kaylea Burgess' base hit and scurried home on on Ashleigh Rowland's RBI groundout.
Whitney Tate's two-out triple plated Jacey Smith, aboard via error, to tie the game at 3-3 in the fourth.
Burgess and Rowland singled and Makayla Prudhomme was safe on an error as the Lady Spartans loaded the bases with one out in the fifth. Carri Nugent's RBI groundout sent Burgess across with the go-ahead run, and Smith reached on an error, bringing the score to 5-3.
Briley opened the decisive sixth with a base hit to left before Carson Lyon hit into a force play. Wood followed with an opposite-field double to right, closing the gap to 5-4. Next up, Catherine Trichell singled home the tying run and continued to second on the throw to the plate. Trichell took third on a wild pitch and scored the go-ahead run on Kaela Mullins' base hit to right.
Down to their final out, the Lady Spartans put the go-ahead run on the basepaths when Taylor Pollard legged out an infield single and Tate walked. Sylvestri then retired the side on a fly out to left fielder Jayda Smith.
Pitching around seven errors, Sylvestri allowed one earned run on eight hits while striking out five and walking four.
Hits were even at eight apiece. Wood went 3-for-3 with a double to pace the Lady Panthers (5-2), Tanner Wilson doubled and Briley, Trichell, Mullins and Carly Wilson singled.
Abrams and Burgess had two singles apiece for the Lady Spartans, Tate tripled and Rowland, Nugent and Pollard singled.
Tate was charged with three earned runs through 5.1 innings in taking the loss. She struck out five and walked. Abrams finished up in the circle for Caldwell (4-1).
Sterlington returns to action Monday in Winnsboro vs. Franklin Parish before opening District 2-3A play at home vs. Wossman on Tuesday. Starting time for both tilts is 5 p.m.
