Sterlington 7, Grant 6

MONROE — Erasing a 6-1 fifth-inning deficit, Sterlington closed out the Polar Bear Classic with a 7-6 victory over Grant, Saturday afternoon at the ULM Softball Complex.

Kelsey Mobley's three-run bomb with Kennedy Reitzell (single) and Kaylea Gordon (double) aboard put the Lady Cougars in command 6-1 in the top of the fifth.

Sterlington began to chip away with two in its half of the fifth.

Jada Smith opened the inning with a base hit and stole second.

Two outs later, Carson Lyon kept the inning going with an RBI double and Rebekah Wood followed with a run-producing single to bring the Lady Panthers within 6-3.

Sterlington completed the comeback with four in the sixth.

Carly Wilson drew a one-out walk and moved to third on Amber Parnell's double to deep center field. Both runners scored when Smith reached on an error and continued to second as Parnell slid home ahead of the throw to the plate.

Back to the top of the order, Tanner Wilson slapped an infield single and Smith dashed home with the tying run. K.B. Briley followed with a base hit and Lyon laced an RBI single over the first base bag to plate the go-ahead run.

Grant grabbed a 3-0 lead in the third.

Ashton Wells drew a lead off walk, Emily McGehee was hit by a pitch and Reitzell singled to load the bases with one away. Smith then made a running catch to shag Gordon's sacrifice fly to deep left field for the second out. Next up, Mobley crushed a two-run double to make it 3-0.

Sterlington got one back in the third when Tanner Wilson reached on a two-base error and continued home as Briley bounced a double off the left field fence.

Sylvestri faced seven batters over two scoreless innings to notch the win. Freshman Emarie Adams fanned seven and walked four in her first varsity start before giving way to Tanner Wilson in the fifth.

Briley and Lyon doubled and singled for the Lady Panthers (3-2), Parnell doubled and Tanner Wilson, Wood, Trichell and Smith singled.

Mobley swung the heavy aluminum for the Lady Cougars (3-3), going 2-for-3 with a homer, a double and five RBIs. Reitzell added two singles and Gordon doubled.

Kaytlon Ward went the distance in the circle for the Lady Cougars, striking out three and walking four.
