Sterlington 9, Ouachita 4
Sterlington put eight runs on the board in the top of the sixth on its way to a 9-4 season-opening baseball victory over Ouachita on Monday night.
With the Panthers down 2-1, Luke Denman's infield single started the pivotal inning. Tucker Allen followed with another base hit and Kyle Elee walked to load the bases with nobody out. Jarrett McDonald singled Denman across with the tying run and Carson Clowers plated the go-ahead run with a fielder's choice.
Things quickly fell apart for the Lions from there.
"It wasn't like we just hammered them for eight — they gave us a bunch of those runs," Sterlington coach Mark Sims said.
Nonetheless, Sims was far from disappointed.
"It was a good way to start," Sims said. "We played well against a good 5A team."
Trey Rugg allowed four runs (three earned) through 6.1 innings for the win before Adam Tubbs came on to record the final two outs.
Sterlington is scheduled to play three games in the Delhi Charter Tournament, starting with a 5:30 p.m. contest vs. Franklin Parish on Thursday in Winnsboro. Taking Wednesday's rainfall and the weekend forecast into consideration, it appears highly unlikely that any of the games will be played.
