Bastrop 64, Richwood 49
MONROE — Denterrius McHenry and Garrett Guirlando combined for 35 points as Bastrop took down Richwood 64-49 Thursday night at Carroll.
After the two teams played on even terms through the first half, the third quarter proved to be the tipping point. Breaking a 27-all tie, the B-Rams outscored the R-Rams 20-5 to open up a 47-32 lead.
"We finished our layups and made our free throws," Bastrop coach Theabury Odom said. "That's the recipe for a win in high school basketball."
Bastrop made 14-of-17 (82.3 percent) free throws — 7-of-8 in the third quarter — while Richwood was just 1-of-3 from the stripe.
Uncharacteristically, Bastrop spent the majority of the night in a 2-3 zone rather than a man-to-man.
"Richwood is extremely long, so going to the 2-3 zone helped us out on the boards," Odom said. "Denterrius McHenry and Garrett Guirlando did a great job on the boards, and we were able to limit them to one shot."
McHenry was high scorer for Bastrop (6-3) with 18 points, followed by Guirlando with 17, SirQuan Hawkins with 12, Cortlen Newsome with 11, Neverless Frazier with four and Jordan Rabun with two.
Though pleased with the balanced scoring, Odom was happier with the defensive effort.
"SirQuan had a great night offensively and defensively," Odom said. "Cortlen is known for his offense, but he made a tremendous impact tonight on defense. Jordan Rabun gave us what we wanted defensively."
Jordan Williams paced Richwood (5-8) with 21 points.
Bastrop is paired against host Rayville in the "Big E" Classic on Wednesday at 7 p.m. Other first round games have Delhi vs. Franklin Parish on Wednesday at 4 p.m., Carroll vs. Neville on Wednesday at 8:30 p.m., and Ouachita vs. Southwood on Thursday at 7 p.m.
