Ouachita 5, Sterlington 0 (boys)

Visiting Ouachita handled Sterlington in convincing fashion, carving out a 5-0 victory Tuesday night in the season opener for both sides.

"It's not the result we were looking for by any means," Sterlington coach Kyle Keyes said. "We have some stuff to work on. Give credit to (Ouachita coach) Nick Artigue. They played an outstanding game tonight, and were the better team."

For Ouachita goalkeeper C.J. Robinson, it was virtually a stress-free night as the Lions limited the Panthers to seven shots, three of which were on goal.

"We had a bunch of young guys playing their first varsity game," Keyes said. "Tonight, we experienced some growing pains."

Ouachita went on the attack early as Sam Harris found the bottom of the net from the right angle six minutes into the fixture.

Sterlington could muster only three shots — two of which were in direction of the net — in the first half. Robinson made a routine stop on Tony Velasquez in the 16th minute and an easy save on Jacob Dupree's ambitious shot from distance in the 32nd minute.

Meanwhile, the Lions doubled their lead to 2-0 when Rayshawn Jackson set up Adam Alnossiff's goal from straight on in the 25th minute.

Despite being thoroughly outplayed, the Panthers were down only two as halftime approached.

Harris then hammered a penalty kick into the right side of the goal from 13 yards out to put the Lions up 3-0 at the half.

"Everybody dropped their heads right there," Keyes said.

Jackson's goal from close range widened the difference to 4-0 just five minutes into the second half.

Approximately 20 minutes later, Jackson would inadvertently save a goal for the Panthers. Collecting a long rebound, Nico Aguilar blasted an on-target shot for what appeared to be a sure goal. Unfortunately for Aguilar, the shot struck Jackson and bounced away harmlessly.

Jackson would make amends as his cross set up Aguilar in front of the net to conclude the scoring in the 36th minute.

Sterlington is back in action Thursday, hosting Vidalia in the district opener at 7:30 p.m.
