Bastrop coach Adrian Burnette scheduled George Washington Carver in the season opener with the postseason in mind. Little did he know that he was preparing for a rematch.
Making a return trip to New Orleans Friday night, the Bastrop Rams take on the Carver Rams on Friday in the first round of the Class 4A state playoffs. Kickoff time is 7 p.m. at Joe Brown Stadium.
Carver won the initial meeting with Bastrop 20-12. Burnette scheduled the game with making a long road trip during the playoffs in mind.
"I was preparing us for the playoffs, but I didn't know I was preparing for Carver," Burnette said.
Playoff pairings were released Sunday morning by the LHSAA.
Bastrop (5-4, 2-1 District 3-4A), the No. 17 seed, is seeking to rebound from a 10-0 loss to Neville in Thursday's season finale.
No. 16 Carver (6-3, 2-1) is the No. 16 seed after finishing runner-up to McDonogh #35 in District 10-4A. Coach Byron Addison's Rams closed out the regular season with back-to-back wins over Lake Area New Tech (42-24) and Riverdale (32-7).
Friday's winner moves on to play the No. 32 Buckeye-No. 1 Edna Karr winner in the round of 16. Karr is the defending state champion.
District 2-4A champion Neville, the 2016 state runner-up, is seeded No. 7. Coach Mickey McCarty's Tigers entertain No. 26 Baton Rouge Woodlawn in the first round.
