Former Bastrop Ram Denzel Devall is the first former Crimson Tide athlete to win the University of Alabama's monthly service award.
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Denzel Devall, Director of Football Player Development, was the recipient of the Built By Bama service award for the month of October.
Devall is the first former Crimson Tide athlete to receive the award which is presented monthly to a University of Alabama intercollegiate athletics employee.
"As the first former Crimson Tide student-athlete to earn this honor, Denzel has a unique perspective on what it means to be 'Built By Bama,'" Alabama Athletics Director Greg Byrne said. "The character traits necessary to be nominated for this award were evident in his days as a player and have obviously carried over into his young professional career."
“Denzel has proven invaluable to both the football program and the rest of the department,” Senior Associate Athletics Director for Compliance Matt Self said. “He has tackled the transition from student-athlete to staff member with a maturity beyond his years. In what is unquestionably a difficult and taxing job, he has demonstrated patience, dependability and professionalism. We appreciate what Denzel has already done and look forward to seeing him continue to grow and improve.”
Deputy Director of Athletics Finus Gaston expanded on that sentiment, saying, “Denzel has one of the more difficult roles on our staff, carrying multiple duties and responsibilities that far exceed normal business hours. There is a lot to say for someone who literally works around the clock with a constant smile on his face and an infectious, positive attitude. We are lucky to have someone of such high character on our staff who truly works well with anyone he comes in contact with on a daily basis.”
The importance of his role and his affinity for it are impressive. As football operations director Ellis Ponder said, “Denzel does an awesome job for the department as a whole. He has a very unique and meaningful relationship with our players — one that is extremely impressive and important when talking about 18-22 year olds. Denzel is all about getting the job done and we are lucky to have him.”
"Transferring his pride, worth ethic and drive from the playing field to the professional realms is just one of the reasons that Denzel is a great representative of the Built by Bama Award," Byrne added. "This honor continues to highlight those within our department that live up to the Built by Bama spirit that is vital to the Crimson Tide’s ongoing success."
A four-year starter at Bastrop High, Devall signed with Alabama as a linebacker. He appeared in 50 games (25 starts) while helping the Crimson Tide to a pair of national titles as a freshman in 2012 and as a senior in 2015.
Shortly after completing his degree in Exercise Science Physiology, Devall was hired by coach Nick Saban as Alabama's first player development personnel assistant. He has also worked as an assistant strength and conditioning before being promoted to his current position.
