Prairie View Lady Spartans Preview
Megan Till enters her first season as coach of the Prairie View Lady Spartans looking toward the future.
With only two seniors on the roster, the Lady Spartans will lean heavily on five freshmen.
"The five freshmen are going to play a lot of minutes for us," Till said, referring to guards Chloe Halterman, Reagan Patrick, Emily Blackard, forward Maci Herrington and center Tori Gardner.
Till is counting on junior guard Amelia Crnkovic and sophomore forward Hannah Billings to help carry the offense.
"Hannah and Amelia are our two most experienced players," Till said. "I'm looking for Hannah, Amelia and Reagan to be our scorers."
Crnkovic, junior center Rachel Barnhill, senior guard Alex Smith and senior forward Tabor Moyers are the team's only upperclassmen.
"I'm looking for Tori, Maci and Rachel to close the paint up," Till said.
Prairie View saw its first action Monday night against Tallulah in the Tallulah Preseason Classic.
"Tallulah is a really good team. You could they have been playing together for awhile," Till said. "They definitely had the height advantage over us. We have to correct some simple mistakes on defense like missing some rotations and leaving people open."
At this point, Till is still learning the Lady Spartans' personnel.
"We have only been practicing for three weeks," Till said. "I'm looking to see who has the hustle and heart, and seeing where we might be able to take the program in the next couple of years."
Till expects quickness to be the Lady Spartans' strength.
"We have some speed, but not a lot of height," Till said. "We're looking to push the ball."
For now, improvement is the immediate goal.
"I'm looking to build off of our youth," Till said. "I'm looking for my freshmen to set some goals, to grow and to clear a few hurdles over the next couple of years."
Prairie View's junior varsity roster includes eighth-graders Emma Goss (forward) and Emilee Gross (forward) and seventh-graders Chloe Hobson (guard), Kayla Hawthorne (forward), Elle Morgan (forward) and Zoey Fisher (center).
