The National Urban Professional Baseball League will hold tryouts at Baron Ballpark on Friday-Saturday, Nov. 4-5.

Tryouts for the National Urban Professional Baseball League will be held Friday, Nov. 4 and Saturday, Nov. 5 at Baron Ballpark.

Michael E. Mayden, the organization's founder and CEO, says the fledgling league will launch in the spring of 2018 with teams located in Millington, Tennessee, Laurel Mississippi and Hattiesburg, Mississippi or Texarkana, Texas. A fourth team will split time between the three cities. League play calls for a 90-game schedule from May-August.

"We are starting with four teams," Mayden said, "then we are going to expand to 6-8 teams as growth permits."

Bastrop High baseball coach Christian Kidd contacted Mayden about conducting a tryout at Baron.

"My cousin, Bryant Nelson, who played professional baseball for nine years, was telling me about the possibility of the league," Kidd said. "I reached out to Michael Mayden, and he thought Bastrop would be a good place to have a tryout."

Kidd hopes the tryouts will help revive the waning local interest in baseball.

"I'm willing to do anything I can to bring baseball back to this community and promote Baron Ballpark," Kidd said. "Baron Ballpark is still here, and it's important to get the name back out there. I'm looking at the bigger picture. My goals are to give kids the chance to play baseball, and to help Bastrop dominate in all sports. Hopefully, this will open the door for other leagues to hold tryouts in Bastrop."

Tryouts for the NUPBL are being conducted throughout the United States. Each team will carry 96 players on its roster.

"We are looking for the best 96 baseball players available," Mayden said.

Tryouts are open to ages 17 and up. Any aspiring or current college baseball players are advised to consider the eligibility rules before attending the camp.

"This is a professional league," Mayden said. "Once you sign, you lose your amateur status."

Registration is being conducted online via the league's web site at www.urbanbaseball247.com. Fee for the tryout is $100.
