Prairie View's season drew to a close Saturday as the Lady Spartans fell to Centreville and Sylva-Bay in the MAIS Class 2A State Tournament.
BROOKHAVEN, Miss. — Prairie View dropped a pair of slugfests in the MAIS Class 2A South State Tournament on Saturday.
Late comeback bids fell short in both games as the Lady Spartans lost a 15-12 first-round decision to Centreville (Miss.) and a 16-11 verdict to Sylva-Bay (Miss.).
Sylva-Bay 16, Prairie View 11
Trailing 16-6 going into the bottom of the seventh, the Lady Spartans went down fighting in an elimination game against Sylva-Bay.
Prairie View's first six batters made their way aboard as Mauri Herrington walked, Anna Grace White singled, Emma Goss and Elle Morgan reached on back-to-back errors, Maci Herrington cranked an RBI double and Kayla Hawthorne drew a walk. Sylva-Bay, however, would retire the next three batters in order to end the threat.
Down 4-0, the Lady Spartans charged back to take their only lead with five in the bottom of the third.
With one out, Goss and Morgan singled, Maci Herrington doubled home a run and Hawthorne beat out a bunt single.
One out later, Rachel Hankins knocked a two-run double, Chloe Hobson plated the tying run with a double and Madi Crymes laced an RBI single to put the Lady Spartans in front 5-4.
Sylva-Bay quickly reclaimed the lead with three in the fourth before tacking on six in the fifth and four in the seventh.
Maci Herrington (3-for-5) paced the Lady Spartans' 12-hit attack with two doubles, a single and two RBI. Goss and Morgan supplied two singles apiece, Hankins and Hobson doubled and White and Crymes singled.
Centreville 15, Prairie View 12
Macie Miley went 4-for-5 and scored five runs as Centreville outlasted Prairie View in the first-round matchup.
Centerville stormed out to a 6-0 lead in the bottom of the first, but Prairie View battled back with five in the second before tying the game 7-7 in the third on Madi Crymes' two-run double.
Centreville went ahead to stay with two in third and widened its lead to 13-7 with one in the fourth and three in the fifth.
Anna Grace White's two-run triple and Crymes' second two-run double of the game fueled a five-run sixth as Prairie View closed the deficit to 13-12.
Miley's two-out RBI double helped the Lady Tigers expand their lead to 15-12 in the bottom of the sixth.
Crymes was the Lady Spartans' offensive catalyst with a pair of doubles, four RBI and two run scored. White tripled, singled and drove in two runs, Mauri Herrington poled a two-run double and Emma Goss, Elle Morgan, Maci Herrington, Hankins and Hobson singled.
