Moments after Bastrop held West Ouachita at the 1-yardline, Rashard Lynch raced 51 yards for the decisive score as the Rams notched a 12-8 junior varsity triumph over the Chiefs on Monday night.
Facing second-and-goal at the 1 on its first possession of the final half, the Chiefs fumbled the ball out of the back of the end zone for a touchback.
Taking over at the 20, the Rams moved the sticks on an 18-yard pass from Laborious Washington to Travez Thompson.
Moments later, Lynch motored 51 yards to give the Rams a 12-6 lead with 1:26 remaining in the third quarter.
Following an empty possession by the Chiefs, Thompson's 74-yard punt return was taken off the board due to a block in the back.
Starting from its own 43, Bastrop advanced to the 4 as a leaping Thompson pulled down a 40-yard reception.
Responding with a defensive stand of their own, the Chiefs took over on downs at their own 5.
From there, the visitors were able to manage a pair of first downs while advancing to their own 40. On fourth-and-seven, Tyree Bryan and Jordan Doaty combined for a sack to clinch the victory for the Rams.
West Ouachita opened the scoring in the second quarter on a 2-yard pass from Tobias Owens to Gavin Watkins. Zak Ponder ran the 2-point conversion as the Chiefs opened up an 8-0 lead.
Bastrop, which managed only two first downs on its first three series, struck for a big play late in the second quarter.
On second-and-16 from the 14, Washington flipped a short pass to Semaj Tennant, who slipped multiple tackles down the right sideline on his way to the end zone. Tennant's 86-yard catch-and-run closed the deficit to 8-6 with just 1:12 left in the half.
Washington completed 11-of-20 passes for 181 yards. Tennant finished with three catches for 93 yards, while Thompson hauled in seven passes for 73.
Lynch rushed for 66 yards on four attempts.
Among the Rams' defensive leaders were Bryan, Doaty, Kintrae Robinson, K.J. Winston, Paul Purdy, Chris Lumpkins, Asanti Smith and Baron Martin.
