WOODVILLE, Miss. — Tanner Caldwell scored four touchdowns (three rushing, one receiving) and Prairie View piled up 534 yards of total offense on its way to a 44-0 triumph over Wilkinson County Christian on Friday night.
WCCA won the previous two meetings agaisnt the Spartans in the 2015 quarterfinals and during the 2016 regular season, but was simply overmatched this time around.
Prairie View (3-0) opened the scoring on its second possession as Caldwell's 40-yard reception sparked an eight-play, 77-yard drive. Layton Rainbolt's 5-yard run on third-and-goal, followed by Hayes Crockett's 2-point run put the Spartans up 8-0.
WCCA never got untracked offensively, managing just two first downs and 24 yards of total offense (all rushing).
Cole Kinnaird and Kolton Farrar combined to stop a third down running play for a loss of six to end the Rams' third series.
Taking over at their own 43, the Spartans soon advanced to the 5 on Crockett's 43-yard pass to Layton Woodard.
A sack and a false start backed the Spartans up to the 22 before Crockett threw to Caldwell, who slipped a tackler at the line of scrimmage and had smooth sailing down the left sideline. Caldwell's first touchdown widened the visitors lead to 14-0 early in the second quarter.
Hunter Burgess' 19-yard run — the Rams' longest gain of the evening — gave WCCA (0-3) its first first down, but Gage Riles' sack soon disrupted the drive.
Following a punt, the Spartans set up at their own 30. From there, Rainbolt darted around the left edge, escaped two tacklers near the first down marker and sprinted 70 yards to paydirt. Crockett's conversion made it 22-0.
Caldwell also contributed on the defensive end, intercepting a deflected pass on the Rams' next series.
Setting up at the 43, Prairie View found the end zone two plays later as Crockett's 55-yard burst set up Caldwell's 2-yard TD. Crockett threw to Kentrell Spencer on the conversion, extending the difference to 30-0 with less than a minute to play in the half.
Receiving the second half kickoff, the Spartans marched 51 yards on five plays. Lining up at quarterback, Caldwell covered the final 11 yards and punched in the 2-point conversion to put the Spartans in command 38-0.
Layton Woodard's 55-yard reception set up Caldwell's 8-yard run to conclude the scoring.
Prairie View averaged an astounding 15.7 yards per play on 34 offensive snaps, rushing for 276 yards and passing for 258.
Crockett was 8-of-12 for 258 yards through the air, while rushing six times for 72 stripes. Rainbolt led the ground game with 111 yards on 10 carries.
Caldwell caught four passes five passes for 170 yards and a TD, and ran four times for 29 yards and three scores.
Woodard accounted for 97 yards on just two touches with a 55-yard run and a 43-yard reception.
Prairie View was equally dominant on the defensive side as the Rams finished with 2 yards of total offense. Jacob Farrar led the Spartans with seven stops and a tackle in the backfield, followed by Austin Carroll with six tackles, including two for negative yardage. Blake Ray and Jacob Walker recorded sacks.
Prairie View (3-0) is at home Friday night vs. Acadiana Home School. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
