Prairie View 9, Riverdale 8
Elle Morgan's bases-loaded single in the bottom of the seventh sent Prairie View to a 9-8 season-opening victory over Riverdale on Monday afternoon.
With one out and the score tied in the bottom of the seventh, Emma Goss singled to left, Anna Grace White walked and Kaitlyn Bader legged out a bunt single to set up Morgan's game-winning hit. Morgan's third hit and fifth RBI helped Megan Till win her coaching debut with the Lady Spartans.
Trailing 4-0, the Lady Spartans stormed back with two in the second and five in the third.
Morgan's two-run double opened the Prairie View scoring and Maci Herrington cranked another two-run double in the third as the Lady Spartans went up 7-4.
Riverdale regained the lead, 8-7, with four in the fifth.
Prairie View drew even in the sixth when White slashed a leadoff single to left, moved to second as Bader reached via error and came around to score on Morgan's RBI single.
Morgan also pitched three innings of three-hit, scoreless relief to gain the win in the circle. She struck out three without issuing a walk.
At the plate, Morgan went 3-for-5 with a double. Rounding out the seven-hit attack were White with two singles, Herrington with a double and Bader and Goss with singles. White and Goss scored three runs apiece.
Monday's game was, hopefully, the final varsity game on the field that has been shared by Prairie View's baseball and softball teams over the years. If all goes according to plan, the Lady Spartans' new field will be ready in time for the Prairie View Tournament on Saturday, August 12. The new facility is located next to the soon-to-be former field.
