Reaping the rewards of the school's first state baseball championship and a state runner-up softball finish, the postseason awards have piled up for the Sterlington Panthers and Lady Panthers.
Senior right-hander Spencer Davis, who spearheaded Sterlington's drive to its first state championship in program history, has been voted Class 2A's Outstanding Player by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association.
Inspired by his mother, who was suffering from cancer, Davis finished the emotional season with a perfect 12-0 record and a 1.29 ERA through 16 starts. Logging 81.1 innings, he allowed 58 hits and walked only 22 batters for a remarkable 0.98 WHIP.
Davis was especially clutch down the stretch, throwing complete games in all three starts, including a no-hitter in the second round vs. North Caddo. Closing out his career in style, Davis was named MVP of the State Tournament after pitching the Panthers to an 11-1 triumph over Lakeside in the state finals.
Sterlington won the state championship Saturday, May 13, just in time for Davis to present the MVP trophy as a Mother's Day gift. Mrs. Donna Davis passed away a week later on the morning of Sunday, May 21. But between Spencer's graduation and the Panthers' state championship run, her final days were filled with happy moments.
Davis is joined on the first-team All-State squad by junior second baseman Jarrett McDonald and senior third baseman Dalton Dopson, the District 2-2A co-MVP. Senior center fielder Jacob Barr is an honorable mention All-State selection.
Davis, Dopson and Barr were all four-year starters for the Panthers (33-5).
Mysteriously, the state runner-up Lady Panthers were shutout on the first-team All-State softball team. Freshman shortstop K.B. Briley and junior pitcher/outfielders Tanner Wilson and Breanna Sylvestri were honorable mention honorees.
