Loreauville (18-9) at Sterlington (29-5), Friday, 5 p.m.

Striving to advance to the state semifinals for the first time since 2010, the Sterlington Panthers host the Loreauville Tigers in a best-of-three Class 2A second-round playoff series this weekend. Starting times are set for 5 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m. Saturday. Game 3, if necessary, will be played 30 minutes following the completion of Game 2. Loreauville will be the designated home team for the middle contest.

Sterlington claimed back-to-back state runner-up trophies in 2009 and 2010, falling to Evangel 3-1 in '09 at ULM and dropping a 7-3 verdict to Northlake Christian in Shreveport the following year. Since then, the Panthers haven't been able to clear the quarterfinal wall. After being ousted in the semifinals in 2014 and '15, the Panthers dropped a three-game series to eventual state runner-up St. Charles last season.

"For our senior bunch, this is their third time in four years in the quarterfinals," Sterlington coach Mark Sims said. "They've been through this before, so they know what to expect."

Unlike the past three seasons, the Panthers have home field advantage through the first three rounds after securing the No. 1 seed.

"The only difference is we're playing at home this time," Sims said. "We get to play in our home ballpark and sleep in our own beds. We just have to go play baseball."

Junior second baseman Jarrett McDonald and senior third baseman Dalton Dopson lead the Panthers offensively. McDonald bats leadoff, while Dopson, a ULM signee, is the Panthers' cleanup hitter.

Sterlington has won its three previous playoff outings by a combined margin of 32-0, routing No. 32 seed West St. Mary 14-0 and sweeping No. 17 North Caddo 10-0 and 8-0 last weekend.

Sterlington (29-5) will send Trey Rugg to the mound Friday night with Spencer Davis getting the nod in Game 2. A Game 3 starter, if required, will be a game-time decision.

Rugg threw a two-hit shutout in Game 1 vs. North Caddo, and Davis followed with a no-hitter in Game 2.

Sims says the easy outings are over.

"It's not going to be like that this weekend," Sims said. "We are looking for some tight, close ballgames. They have good pitching and they can swing the bat. We are going to have to show up and play."

Loreauville (18-9), the No. 9 seed, has proven it can win on the road, having swept No. 8 French Settlement 8-6 and 14-4 last weekend.

"Loreauville has a good program, they are always in the playoffs," Sims said. "Any team in the final eight is going to be good. They won their district (6-2A). They'll be ready to play."

Loreauville is led by pitcher/third baseman Kam Broussard and catcher Connor Landry. The cousins recently signed to continue their baseball careers at the College of St. Joseph, an NAIA school in Vermont.

Kam Broussard walloped a grand slam home run and finished with six RBI while notching the complete game victory as the Tigers finished off French Settlement on Saturday.

Bryson Broussard picked up the win in relief and socked a solo home run in Friday's game vs. French Settlement.

The Loreauville-Sterlington winner moves on to play the No. 5 Many-No. 4 Kinder victor in the semifinals. The semifinals and finals will be played at McMurry Park in Sulphur.
