Sterlington 13, Doyle 2

SULPHUR — Carson Lyon went 2-for-3 with four RBI as Sterlington pounded out 13 hits on its way to a 13-2 quarterfinal triumph over Doyle on Thursday, April 27.

The Lady Panthers won their first Allstate Sugar Bowl/LHSAA Softball State Tournament game since defeating South Cameron 6-2 in the 2003 Class 1A state finals.

Doyle struck first as Caitline Fruge led off the bottom of the first with a base hit, moved to second on Sydney Taylor's sacrifice bunt and eventually tallied on an error.

Sterlington (22-12) responded quickly and emphatically. With two outs and the bases empty, seven straight Lady Panthers reached safely.

Breanna Sylvestri was safe on an error and stole second before Amber Parnell, Lyon, Sydnee Davis, Tanner Wilson and Jada Smith linked together five consecutive singles. K.B. Briley followed with a two-run triple to left, giving the Lady Panthers a 6-1 cushion.

Lyon's three-run home run over the left field fence brought the score to 9-1 in the third. Rebekah Wood drew a leadoff walk and Parnell singled to set up Lyon's blast.

Doyle picked up a run in the fourth on Alissa Ragas' sacrifice fly.

Sterlington added one in the fourth as Sylvestri doubled and scored on Parnell's fielder's choice, stretching the margin to 10-2.

RBI singles by Catherine Trichell and Sylvestri sparked a three-run sixth to wrap up the scoring.

Tanner Wilson went the distance on the mound, allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits, while striking out five and walking five.

Lyon homered and singled to spearhead the Lady Panthers' 13-hit onslaught. Sylvestri doubled and singled, Tanner Wilson, Smith and Parnell had two singles apiece, Briley tripled and Trichell and Davis singled.

Fruge doubled and Elsie Jones singled for theNo. 3-seeded Lady Tigers (19-13).
