Beekman 17, Lincoln Prep 0
Making school history on two fronts, the Beekman Lady Tigers defeated Lincoln Prep 17-0 Tuesday afternoon in the first round of the Class 1A state softball playoffs. It marked the first time for Beekman to host a postseason event as well as win a playoff game in any sport.
Beekman, the No. 10 seed, will try to achieve another first by advancing to the State Tournament in Sulphur when it travels to No. 7 Delta Charter for a second round matchup. Game time is 5 p.m. Friday in Ferriday, with the winner punching its ticket to the quarterfinals.
Delta Charter was a 17-0 winner over Plain Dealing on Tuesday.
The Storm downed the Lady Tigers 7-1 at Beekman in District 2-1A play on April 6.
About the only drama Tuesday's game had to offer was the weather. Though several dark clouds passed over, the rain held off.
After Madison Risinger struck out the side in the top of the first, the Lady Tigers plated nine in the bottom of the first.
Tanner Spigner singled to start the outburst and Megan Huntsman walked. Spigner took third on a wild pitch and crossed home with the first run when Gracie Wooden hit into a force play. Kateland Fulmer followed with an RBI single and Kasadee Armfield drilled a two-run triple, bringing the score to 4-0.
Alyssa Culbreath's two-run inside-the-park home run highlighted Beekman's eight-run second.
Risinger struck out six of the 10 batters she faced.
Jade Anderson reached on an error to start the Lincoln second, but was erased when shortstop Spigner started a 6-4-3 double play.
Alexia Perkins singled to center with two outs in the third for the Lady Panthers' (4-11) lone hit.
All 14 Lady Tigers (8-13) to suit up for the contest had the opportunity to bat. Armfield went 2-for-2 with a triple, a single and three RBI to lead the way. Rounding out the nine-hit attack were Culbreath with a home run, Alexus Crumley with a double and Spigner, Reynolds, Fulmer, Holleigh Johnson and Risinger with base hits.
