Prairie View 8, Union Christian 0 (1st game)

FARMERVILLE — Blake Ray threw a no-hitter as Prairie View beat Union Christian 8-0 in the first game of Thursday's double header to clinch the MAIS District 6-2A championship.

Ray, a junior right-hander, allowed only three base runners as he hit Evan Hodge with two outs in the first, Joe Carpenter with one down in the second and Kenton Frye with one away in the sixth.

Prairie View got all it would need in the top of the first.

After the first two batters went down in order, six straight batters reached safely.

Auston Smith doubled to left-center and Blake Ray singled, setting up consecutive RBI singles by Hunter Herring and Hayes Crockett. Walks to Jacob Fortner and Andrew Janes forced Herring home with the third and final run of the frame.

Prairie View doubled its lead to 6-0 with three more in the fourth.

Janes led off with a single, moved up 90 feet on Dalton Daniel's sacrifice bunt and Tanner Caldwell drew a two-out walk. Smith then yanked a two-run triple to left-center and scored on an error.

Prairie View added single tallies in the fifth and seventh.

Fortner singled home Crockett, who doubled, in the fifth.

In the seventh, Crockett singled and later swiped home on the front end of a double steal.

Ray fanned eight and never allowed a runner past second base in the complete game effort.

Smith led the way for the Spartans (22-2, 12-2) at the dish with a triple and a pair of doubles. Rounding out the 13-hit onslaught were Crockett with a double and two singles, Ray with two singles, Caldwell with a double and Herring, Fortner, Janes and Daniel with base hits.

Frye took the loss for the Lions with two innings of relief from Pace Pearson.
