Seeded No. 6 in the Class 2A softball state playoffs bracket, the Sterlington Lady Panthers start postseason play with a home game against No. 27 Lakeview, Tuesday at 5 p.m.
Ranked No. 4 two weeks ago, the Lady Panthers dropped two spots in the power ratings after closing out the season 4-4 against a string of tough opponents. During the season-ending stretch, Sterlington defeated Division I Evangel (3-1) and Class 5A West Monroe (8-0) with losses to 3A powers Winnfield (6-5) and Jena (5-4), Class 4A West Ouachita (6-2) and Division I Cedar Creek (4-0).
Tanner Wilson threw a complete game, four-hit shutout and Catherine Trichell slugged a three-run home run as the Lady Panthers finished the regular season on a high note Tuesday night against West Monroe.
Sterlington (19-12, 5-1), the District 2-2A co-champion earned its highest ranking since reaching the state quarterfinals as a No. 3 seed in 2012.
As the No. 15 seed last year, the Lady Panthers snapped a streak of three straight first-round playoff losses with a 9-5 victory over Vinton before bowing to eventual state runner-up Menard 3-0 in the second round.
Lakeview (7-10, 1-1 District 1-2A) ended the regular season with a pair of lopsided losses at the hands of Dodson, 16-0, and Union Parish, 12-0.
The Lakeview-Sterlington winner will be matched against the No. 22 Lake Arthur-No. 11 Mamou victor in the second round.
