Allen Larkin Spires Jr. was sworn in this week as the youngest member of the Mer Rouge Board of Aldermen, filling the unexpired seat of alderman Marley Oldham.

It is my sincere hope that everyone read the story in Thursday’s Enterprise regarding the meeting with the DOTD. There are people in Bastrop who wish to see a bypass around the downtown area for all the 18-wheeler traffic we are sure to get as US Hwy. 425 becomes four lanes. I am not one of those people.

Once considered an unbranded calf, the term "maverick" has come to define a politician who takes an independent stand. It has been argued that, despite the "R" behind his name, John McCain can't be branded - or painted in a box. His record indicates that he has bucked the party brand to blaze an independent path - including legislation on tax cuts, embryonic stem-cell research and immigration.
