People selling items on the side of the road or in parking lots be warned.

Morehouse Parish Sheriff Mike Tubbs said his office is cracking down on these vendors and they must have proper occupational license and be registered with the Morehouse Parish Sales Tax Commission.

“There are several vendors selling items such as t-shirts, purses and the like that have not registered with the tax commission nor have they purchased an occupational license,” said Tubbs. “We had a deputy checking with these vendors today and several were told to get their license or be ticketed.”

A “Peddler’s License” is needed for anyone who sells items that are manufactured somewhere else and sold here. This is required for anyone who sets up their wares on parking lots. The cost of the license is $200 and the vendor must be registered with the tax commission before they can obtain a license. Also, vendors must have written permission from the land owner to set up on any property. If a business is shut down, vendors still must have written permission to be on the property.

“It is not fair to our store owners who are trying to make a living for these vendors to not to be registered or have an occupational license,” said Tubbs. “In the future, we will be issuing tickets for those who do not comply with the law.”
