Gibson Cleaners has been under the ownership of Adney Gibson for over half a century. Now, after 51 years of service to Bastrop residents, the torch is being passed down to her son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Randy Gibson.
“She’s (Adney) ready to slow down,” said Gary Gibson. “We always knew we’d buy the business one day.”
Fifty-one years ago, Adney and her husband Henry bought Gibson Cleaners from Johnny Parrino Sr. The original name was Modern Cleaners. They’re unsure how long Modern Cleaners was in business but the original dry cleaning machine made during the 1920s came with the building and is still in use today.
Henry and Adney Gibson were married for 50 years after meeting in Bastrop. He passed away 15 years ago.
“He (Henry) was raised in Delhi and I was raised in Winnsboro,” Adney Gibson said. “I have no idea why we came to Bastrop.”
Shortly after marrying, Adney and Henry moved to Anchorage, Ala., for three years where they had two sons, Gary and Clay. After Henry’s job ran out in Anchorage, they moved back to Bastrop where they bought Modern Cleaners about six years later and renamed it Gibson Cleaners.
Clay and Gary Gibson grew up working in their parents’ dry cleaners business on and off between school and other jobs. Clay passed away in 1994.
“I worked at the old mill in Bastrop until they closed it down,” Gary Gibson said. “After that I worked here a lot and helped my parents.”
Gary’s wife and co-owner of Gibson Cleaners, Randy Gibson, met Gary while they both attended Bastrop High. After graduating together in 1969, they married a year later.
Gary and Randy Gibson have spent their entire life in Bastrop. Their two daughters, Carmen Jordan and Liz Dowies, now adults, worked at Gibson Cleaners a lot while growing up.
“They realized they wanted to go to college after working here,” Randy Gibson said. “This job is hard work.”
With 66 years combined experience between them in the dry cleaning business, Gary and Randy Gibson said the business will remain the same with the addition of their new service and wash service.
Bastrop resident Eric Hollis is a regular customer at Gibson Cleaners. He said he didn’t realize they’d changed owners because he still sees Adney Gibson in the store and the service is still the same.
“I don’t like ironing and they do a great job,” Hollis said. “I plan to keep coming here.”

Gary said even though Gibson Cleaners has changed ownership, customers can still expect to see his mother when they come in.
“She was very well taken care of when we bought the place,” Gary Gibson said. “She doesn’t have to be here. She’s here because she wants to be here.”
Gary and Randy Gibson said they will work to meet their customers’ cleaning, alteration and laundry needs with courteous service.
“This is where we’ve always been,” Gary Gibson said. “We’re glad to be here.”
“We’re thankful for what the Lord has given us,” said Randy Gibson. “We’re truly blessed.”
