The man known as mayor for the last 20 years in Bastrop was honored Tuesday by his family, friends and the community.
The Bastrop/Morehouse Chamber of Commerce sponsored a reception for the former Mayor Clarence Hawkins to thank him for his 20 years of service to the city and allowed some of the people closest to him to give their thoughts on the man.
Arthur Hamlin, who is a friend of Hawkins and a former City Council member, said, “it’s an honor for me to have the opportunity to say a few words about [Hawkins].”
He said when Hawkins became mayor “it was one of the best things that happened to me. People realized they could call the mayor. It’s an honor for me and my family to be able to share your father. We appreciate what you have done for the City of Bastrop. I know you have worked hard.”
Senator David Vitter’s representative presented Hawkins with a letter and certificate.
His letter said “we are truly honored to have you as a leader. I’ve truly enjoyed working with you.”
Monroe Mayor Jamie Mayo spoke about his days as an athlete when Hawkins was in the school system and the nickname Jamie Sweet Mayo.
“I was just thinking how much of a blessing it is to be here. I guess it was about 20 years ago I witnessed his inauguration,” Mayo said. “When you think of all the elected officials, I don’t know of any more difficult [than mayor]. You’re dealing with so many different issues. It certainly says a lot about the type of person he is and commitment he made. He’s a rare commodity. Everybody should have a mayor they can come to, and Mayor Hawkins has been my mayor. We love you and appreciate you and applaud you for a job well done, and God is not through with you yet.”
Senator Mike Walsworth, Representative Sam Little and Chamber president Jerry Pye presented Hawkins with plaques and certificates thanking him for 20 years of service.
His friend and neighbor, Jimmy Christmas, told him he was proud of him.
“He set a good example for our community. He represented us so well,” Christmas said. “I’m proud to be his friend. Clarence, we love you.”
Hawkins’s son and daughter also spoke about their pride and love for their father that served Bastrop for 20 years.
