It’s hard to figure consolidating operations at a tiny rural post office like the one that serves the Jones community would help the United States Postal Service stop the $23 million in losses the agency posts every day, but it’s part of the plan.
A USPS spokesman said Tuesday the Jones post office is part of what’s called a delivery unit optimization plan that’s being implemented across the country.
“We’ve relocated the single rural carrier that served tthere to the Bonita Post Office,” said McKinney Boyd. “We’re looking at streamlining every facet of our operation.”
Boyd, who serves as spokesman for the agency in Louisiana, said the optimization plan is being implemented at other small post offices across the state.
Over the weekend, the Enterprise received an email from a reader who said the Jones post office had actually scaled back the hours it was open.
“That’s not the case at all,” Boyd said. “The center still has its normal hours for retail operation of 8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.”
Boyd added that while a reduction in hours is being considered, it had received final approval.
“Anytime a recommendation like that is made, it has to be approved by headquarters,” Boyd said.
