Libby the Library Giraffe spends more time on the road than the average plush plaything.

She has already toured 10 parishes in northeast Louisiana. This week, she’s taking in the sights and posing for photos all over Morehouse Parish.

“It’s been a lot of fun for the library staff to come up with places for her to visit,” said Morehouse Parish librarian Ellen Highsmith. “We want her to see all of Morehouse Parish that she can.”

Libby is something of a mascot for the Trailblazer library system’s summer reading program. The theme of the program is “Reading Takes You Places.”

Libby was donated by Toys R Us and will have visited all 13 parishes in the Trailblazer system before the summer ends.

“We have to take photos and document everywhere she’s been,” said Highsmith.

Libby’s travelogue will be placed in a large scrapbook in which each library will include information about the unique aspects of their respective parishes.

On Thursday, Libby had lunch with the Bastrop Lions Club, posed for a photo on top of the stuffed alligator at Simmons Sporting Goods and visited the Enterprise press room.

“Libby stopped at BJ Snowcones this afternoon because it was so hot,” said Highsmith.

Thursday night, the well traveled giraffe attended the midnight premiere of the new “Harry Potter” film.

Libby will visit Morehouse General Hospital and the Visitor Center today. On Tuesday, Jason Stutts will take her for a ride on his tractor in Bonita. Other possible stops include Macon Ridge Foods and Lagniappe Health Care.

“We are also trying to get her an appointment with the mayor,” said Highsmith.

Libby picks up souvenirs in each parish she visits, from a Jackson Parish junior deputy badge to a bandaid, leg splint and diamond ring. Today she will get a feather in her hair from A’Michael’s.

“Every parish has done something,” said Highsmith. “To me, the most impressive thing Libby’s done was to go up in a hot air balloon in Union Parish.”

Highsmith said Libby has posed for photos with children at the library, and copies of the photos will be available for the children to take home later.

“I’m having a lot of fun with all of this foolishness,” said Highsmith.
