A Bastrop woman has been charged with second degree battery after kicking a pregnant woman in the stomach, Det. Capt. Curtis Stephenson said.

In the afternoon hours of July 30, Destiny Coleman of Bastrop was picked up by the Bastrop Police Department in relation to a call about a fight she admitted to getting into the day before.

On July 30 around 4 p.m., a call came in about a fight with a pregnant woman. Officer Sherri Stephens was dispatched to Lee Avenue to speak with Shaneka Mitchell.

Mitchell told Stephens that she was approached by Coleman, 27, on Perry Avenue. She claimed Coleman was cussing and wanting to fight her.

Coleman allegedly hit Mitchell in the head and pushed her on the ground. While Mitchell was on the ground telling her she was four months pregnant, Coleman was said to have sat on her chest and was hitting her.

Mitchell managed to get Coleman off of her and stand up. When she stood, Coleman kicked her in the stomach. Mitchell was able to walk back to Lee Avenue, where she called the police and an ambulance.

Stephens observed a large knot on the side of Mitchell’s head and several scratches on her neck, legs and chest. According to the police report, Mitchell was crying and very upset.

She was admitted to Morehouse General Hospital and stayed overnight to be treated for a rupture in her uterus. Officials said she was doing okay.

Coleman  was charged and transferred to the Morehouse Parish Jail. A review of the police report has been sent to the district attorney’s office for further review. Other charges may be pending.
