More candidates file to run in city, parish elections in October

On the final day of the qualifying period, 17 candidates filed to run for offices in the fall elections.


Morehouse Parish Clerk of Court Carol Jones reported those qualifying Friday were Carol Lord, city marshal; Glennis Diane Lewis and James Lee Wallis Jr., Ward 2 justice of the peace; Joel Carter Fitch, Ward 5 justice of the peace; Mary Hayden, Ward 6 justice of the peace; Ruthie Moore, Ward 7 justice of the peace; John David Sawyer, Ward 8 justice of the peace; Shirley Warner, Ward 9 justice of the peace; Kitty R. Johnson, Ward 10 justice of the peace; Erwin W. Evans Sr., Ward 2 constable; Ben E. Baker, Ward 5 constable;  David G. Thomas, Ward 6 constable; Ben White, Ward 7 constable;  Brandon Gilbreath, Ward 8 constable;   and Derl R. Johnson, Ward 10 constable; Terry B. Foster, Collinston alderman; and Clint E. Shepard II, Oak Ridge alderman.


Others who qualifed during the three-day period that began Wednesday were: Marc Vereen, James  H. Boyd, Lisa Chafford, Ernest Lee, and Scott Floyd, city marshal; Earl Ross Downs Jr. and Phillip Murray Lester, city judge; Vernon E. Bostick Jr, Ward 1 constable; David G. Thomas, Ward 6 constable; Neil Woodard Mott III, Oak Ridge alderman.


Nine incumbent District 4 judges qualifed. They were: Carl Sharp, Division G; Benjamin Jones, Division H; Alvin R. Sharp, Division I; Scott Leehy, Division A; Sharon Ingram Marchman, Division B; John Wilson Rambo, Division C; Stephens Winters, Division D; Marcus Clark, Division E; and Wendell Manning, Division F.


Divisions J and K are new divisions, and Robert C. Johnson and Danny Ellender qualified for those seats.


Others who qualified were: John Larry Lolly, Lousiana Court of Appeals judge, 2nd Circuit, 1st District; Anderson W. Barham, Oak Ridge mayor; Eugene H. Allen, Oak Ridge alderman; Robert P. Deblieux, Ward 1 justice of the peace; Zelia Z. Wilson, Ward 9 justice of the peace; Vernon E. Bostick Jr., Ward 1 constable; Tony Lovell Johnson, Ward 2 constable; and Donna J. Atkins, Ward 9 constable.


The clerk’s office listed Bostick Thursday as running for justice of the peace in Ward 1.
In the 5th Congressional District, Andrew Clack qualified to run against Rep. Rodney Alexander in the first party primary Sept. 6. A primary runoff is set for Oct. 4. For non-congressional races, the open primary is Oct. 4. The general election for all races is Nov. 4.


U.S. Senator Mary Landrieu also qualified. Opposing candidates are J. Jacques Boudreaux, Richard Fontanesi, John Kennedy, Jay Patel and Robert Stewart.
Separately, early voting for the July 19 election in Bastop that will determine whether two half-cent sales-tax propositions ends today at 4:30 p.m.


Mail ballots may be requested from the Morehouse Parish registrar of voters until Tuesday, and mail ballots must be received by Friday.


Mayor Clarence Hawkins said the sales taxes could generate $20 million in revenue over the next 10 years.
