Bastrop may be accepting bids to repair the roof of the Central Fire Station within the next month.
Former state representative Charles McDonald procured the $200,000 needed to repair the building during the regular state legislative session in 2007.

“We were able to put in an amendment with cash capital outlay to fund that project; we were able to secure that funding,” McDonald said.

While the administration has been slow getting the funding out, McDonald said, he feels confident the undertaking will make the fire station better and more well-maintained.

Mayor Clarence Hawkins said finding a roofing style and process that fit the available took more time than the average person would think; the city decided on a structure with metal supports and a slope that will fit the budget.

“Using state money, we have to get approval for the plans and the process,” Hawkins said.
James Lee with Facilities and Planning at the state level requested the roof load calculations from Chris Patrick at Denman Engineering; Patrick was supposed to receive the specifications Wednesday and e-mail them to Lee soon after.

“It should be started on in the next month/ month and a half,”  City of Bastrop Fire Chief Eric Montgomery said. “We’re optimistic.

According to Montgomery a company came in to test dark marks in the building for the existence of black mold and found the discolorations are the product of tar  on the roof and a leak in the ceiling.
